Dr. James A. Rycik received a B.S.Ed. degree from Ohio University and M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees from Kent State University. He was a middle grades reading specialist and language arts teacher in the Cleveland area for 20 years before going to Ashland University, where he is a Professor of Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Rycik served for five years on the Commission on Adolescent Literacy of the International Reading Association and was one of the co-authors of the Commission’s Position Statement on Adolescent Literacy. He is the editor of the journal American Secondary Education and is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. He has collaborated on three previous books on literacy, including Teaching Reading in the Middle Grades with Judith Irvin. Besides literature for young adults, Dr. Rycik’s ongoing scholarly interests include inquiry literacy and the multiple literacies of adolescents.
