Dr. Joan L. Knickerbocker received a B.S Ed. in English Education from the University of Wisconsin River Falls, her M.A.T. in Reading Education from the University of Wisconsin Superior, and her Ph.D. specializing in literacy from the University of Illinois.
She is a Professor of Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Ashland University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in literature for young adults, literacy theory, and methods for middle and secondary school teachers. She has presented at many national and international conferences on a variety of topics related to adolescent literacy; these include creative nonfiction, developing electronic literacy communities, culturally diverse literature, author studies, and changes in contemporary literature for young adults.
Knickerbocker has published in the areas of critical literacy, postmodern literature, and the literary development of young adults, and she has been a longtime reviewer for the Middle School Journal.
